Simplifying Homeschooling in South Africa

It all started after our umpteenth doctor’s visit. You know, the kind where you’re so familiar with the routine that even your toddler greets the nurse like an old friend. My daughter, bless her, had grown so used to having her blood drawn that I felt a pang deep in my mom-heart. Something had to change.

I roped in my husband for “The Talk.” Thankfully, he had my back all the way, fully supportive of my mom-instincts. Homeschooling had officially entered the chat.

Before we made the leap, though, I was met with the usual well-meaning remarks from others:

  • “Just give it time; her immune system is building!”

  • “Have you tried crèche guard?”

  • “Don’t be so paranoid!”

But I knew something wasn’t right. So, we took a deep breath and dove into unknown territory (cue the Jaws theme music): HOMESCHOOLING.

The Monster Called Homeschooling

Now, let’s get one thing straight—I am a qualified, SACE-registered educator and an accredited assessor. As all teachers know, we’re expected to be Jills-of-all-trades. Need a lesson on the fly? Sure! A poster drawn? No problem! Fix the photocopier? Give me a second.

But this homeschooling monster? Oh, it almost devoured me whole.

With a Grade 7, a Grade 3, and a Grade R all needing my attention, I had to admit I couldn’t do it alone. Enter an online resource provider (not a school, because apparently, that’s a no-no). Still, I clung to the dream of keeping a traditional school routine alive.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t work.

Traditional classroom discipline? Nope. Everyone sticking to the same schedule? Double nope. I was drowning, until one day, my kids and I sat down for a heart-to-heart. They told me what they wanted; I told them what I expected. And guess what? Compromise! Who knew that was a thing?

The Magic of Responsibility and Teamwork

For the first time in 12 years, my children took responsibility. They helped each other, followed their own timetable, and for the first time, they were happy. Me? I couldn’t be prouder.

But something was missing.

Even though I was still teaching and witnessing those magical “aha!” moments, I couldn’t stop thinking about how overwhelming it must feel for other parents. Especially when it comes to navigating the Department of Education’s requirements.

I sat in a webinar once—it was terrifying. And that’s coming from someone who understands the lingo. Imagine being a parent who doesn’t know what an ATP is, let alone how to follow one. What about assessments? Subject files? Report cards? It’s enough to make anyone throw in the towel.

Proud to Be a Homeschool Mom

I’m still just a homeschooling mom. Yes, I get the looks when people realise my kids don’t go to a brick-and-mortar school. But you know what? I’m proud.

I’m proud to see my children take charge of their education. I’m proud that I still get to live my passion for teaching. And I’m proud to stand for individualised learning and everything it represents.
