Alright, let’s talk about assessments. That one word that sends homeschooling parents into an existential crisis.

Your child seems ready - until the moment you mention “test.” Suddenly, they forget everything they’ve ever learned. Even their own name is now a multiple-choice question. Meanwhile, you’re sitting there wondering “Have I failed as a teacher? As a parent? Should I just bribe them with snacks and hope for the best?”

Does this sound familiar? Well, we’ve all been there.

At Livi Education & Raising Identity, we believe assessments shouldn’t feel like punishment. They should be a natural, low-stress way to track progress, not a make-or-break event that turns your home into an exam battlefield. So, let’s rethink assessments together.

What’s Wrong With Traditional Assessments?

Somewhere along the way, tests became scary. They’re supposed to check understanding but instead, they cause:

  • Tears & meltdowns (from both kids and parents)

  • Test anxiety that makes kids feel like they’re walking into battle.

  • A fear of failure that kills curiosity and love for learning. But what if assessments weren’t about grades, passing or failing?

What if we treated them as part of the learning process - where kids could make mistakes, try again and actually improve instead of just moving on?

“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”  -  Henry Ford

That’s exactly how Livi Education & Raising Identity approach assessments. Instead of focusing on “getting it right the first time,” we focus on mastery - helping kids actually understand before moving on.

How We Make Assessments Less Stressful (For Everyone!)

You Pick the Invigilation Style

(No, We’re Not Watching You)

We know every homeschooling family is different. Some prefer structured supervision, others want flexibility.

So, we offer two options:

Video Invigilation – A video-recorded session for parents who want structured accountability.

Parent-Supervised Invigilation – You take full control over the process. No cameras, no stress, just a form you sign to take full responsibility.

Parent Tip:

We know it’s tempting to “help” when your child is struggling, but resist the urge! Learning happens when kids figure things out themselves. Giving them all the answers won’t help them build confidence or problem-solving skills.

“The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.”  -  Denis Waitley

Failing Is Part of Learning (No More Fear of Mistakes!)

Somewhere along the line, “fail” became a four-letter word, but real learning happens when kids struggle, try again and improve. That’s why we use a mastery-based system - where kids can retake assessments until they fully understand the work.

This means: No pressure to “get it perfect” on the first try. Learning at their own pace and building confidence instead of fear of failure.

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”  - Winston Churchill

Striving for More Than Just the Minimum

Let’s be honest, traditional tests focus too much on just “passing.” But isn’t the goal of education to inspire, challenge and help kids grow? We’re not here to pile on the pressure, but we do believe that kids should aim for more than just scraping by.

Our assessments encourage them to:

·       Think critically.

·       Engage with learning.

·       Push themselves (without burnout!)

“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.”  -  Ralph Marston

The Realities of Quality Assessments (Why We Charge a Fee)

Yes, we charge a fee for assessments. But here’s why:

A teacher who sets the assessment cannot moderate that assessment.

A teacher who marks the tests must have their marking moderated by another teacher. Assessments are carefully checked to ensure they meet CAPS requirements. This process takes time, expertise and professional oversight. And our team deserves to be compensated for their work.

The Good News?

Assessments aren’t sudden expenses! You can plan and save for them just like books, curriculum materials or extra-curricular activities.

Do You Have to Assess Every Year? (Our Professional Advice)

Technically, the Department of Education only requires an end-of-phase report card for Grade 3, 6 and 9.

But here’s our honest advice:

Assessing your child every year helps you truly understand their progress. Without regular assessments, how do you know if they’ve grasped key concepts? As educators and parents we need to spot gaps early in learning before they become bigger issues. We need to ensure they are on track for future years.

BUT - the choice is always yours. Our goal isn’t to pressure parents into testing more, but to equip you with expert feedback so you can make the best decision for your child.

What You Get with Your Assessment Package

  • A Consultation to personalise the process for your child.

  • A Demarcation Guide (so they actually know what to study).

  • Extra Support Notes if needed.

  • An Invigilation Procedure to make things smoother.

  • A Pre-Moderated Assessment by experienced SACE-registered teachers.

  • Post-Moderation to ensure fair assessment.

  • Comprehensive Feedback - because one number on a test doesn’t tell the full story.

  • Report cards - signed by registered SACE educators.

And best of all? We assess according to a mastery system - where learners can try again until they succeed.

Final Thoughts: Let’s Ditch the Assessment Panic

If assessments make you feel like you need a glass of wine, a nap or both - you’re not alone.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

At Livi Education & Raising Identity, we’re redefining assessments to empower, not intimidate.

Our goal is to help kids love learning again - without the tears, anxiety or last-minute cramming, because assessments shouldn’t be the enemy. They should be a tool for growth.
